The Pacific Northwest enjoys two primary mushroom-foraging seasons. As the soil warms in the spring, morels begin to appear first in low-elevation urban areas with landscaping woodchips. As the season progresses and the mountains melt out, mushrooms start to fruit at all elevations.
In the fall as the autumn rains return, we enjoy our peak mushroom season with the greatest abundance and diversity of mushrooms.
In this class we will cover just the most popular spring mushrooms with a focus on edible species, and the most important lookalikes. This 1-hour class will prepare you for the key characteristics for identifying morels but we will only have time to touch on the other major groups. This class is designed as a standalone option, and I will continue with additional classes in following weeks.
Mushrooms Covered:
Morels – over 10 species just in our area
Similar to morels – Gyromitra, Verpa, Helvella
Oysters
Boletes
Other interesting spring mushrooms
