Mapping Tools
Learning to use mapping tools and applications benefits a mushroom forager in many ways
- Improve safety
- Record-keeping
- Advanced research
- Offline navigation
- Discover new areas
- Estimate distance
- Predict better time/place to look
This is an overview of various tools I use but many foragers get by perfectly well without many of these. At a minimum, I recommend using maps that work offline, and packing for the weather.

Save Offline Maps
It is important to have methods for navigating when you don’t have mobile coverage. You can save maps for an area using Google Maps.

Soil Temperature & Moisture
Soil temperature, specifically warmer temps, are important for spring mushrooms. As the mountains warm up, the mushroom fruiting sweet spot for mushrooms often moves higher in elevation. You can use this link to look at historical and recent soil temp in different areas. This might also help for comparing current soil temps to prior years when you previously found a specific mushroom (like morels).
There are other ways to get this data but this happens to be one that works fairly well, and shows up at the top of a google search for “soil temperature map”.
https://www.greencastonline.com/tools/soil-temperature
This site also has a soil moisture map and graph. This can be especially helpful in the summer when you are trying to find locations that have more soil moisture since the summers are usually quite dry.
