Introduction

The morel map includes the following features to help morel foragers find the right locations and times for finding morels in Washington and Oregon.

  • Burn Locations
  • Burn Perimeters
  • Filtered Burns
  • Area Summaries
  • Snow Coverage
  • Soil Temperature

Details

Burn Locations

Without a filter applied, burn locations displays all recorded burns in Washington and Oregon, including burns on grasslands or in areas that do not include public land. Some foragers may prefer the unfiltered list to discover small areas not included in the “Suitable Areas” filter.

Burn Perimeters

Zoom in to view burn perimeters in greater detail.

Filtered Burns

Use this for a filtered map of burns that include forests on public land. It helps remove clutter from the map but may miss some smaller suitable burns.

Area Summaries

Created using details on elevation, temperature, size, and custom notes on select areas. Many area summaries will be updated weekly as the season progresses.

Soil Temperature

Satellite data recording surface soil temperature from the top few inches. This may be a more stable way to identify suitable areas since soil temperature rises and falls more gradually. Applying this layer gives users a simple way to visualize warmer and cooler regions and understand the similarities and differences among the major regions in the Pacific Northwest.

Note: 1-week delay in data.

Snow Coverage

Help avoid a long drive to a still snow-covered burn. Even a long stretch of unseasonably warm days might not be enough to melt snow in high snowpack areas. Currently, this visualization estimates snow coverage by percentage and does not address depth. Use this layer to track changes in snow coverage and find areas within a burn that are more likely to be snow-free.

Could be up to 1-week delayed

Limitations

Please contact me to report any problems you experience with the maps. Different devices and browsers may display components differently, and you might encounter something I haven’t yet experienced.

Offline Maps

This morel map requires an internet connection and is not suitable for use as a navigation device. There are many ways to use these maps in conjunction with your primary navigation tools, including GaiaGPS, onX, Google Maps, and other popular mapping applications.

It is extremely important to have a reliable navigation tool while in the forest. Please ask if you have questions about using morel maps with your preferred navigation app.

Map Loading Time

This map displays a lot of data which takes a little while to load initially. This will improve significantly in the coming weeks, but I wanted to acknowledge that this delay can be annoying.

Coming Soon

Here are some features I have planned. Not everything will make it to the map this season, but your feedback can help direct my attention to the items that matter most to you.

  • Local Weather
  • Driving Directions
  • Additional Burn Summaries
  • Improved Granularity on Soil Temperature
