Orange Jelly Fungi
There is a wide variety of orange jelly fungi throughout the pacific northwest. Some of these are cone-shaped, while others are more brain-like or lobed. Many of these species are notoriously difficult to identify confidently for a few reasons
- Different species can look nearly identical to each other
- Genetic sequencing has proven we had the wrong names for some species
- Genetic sequencing has confirmed that what was previously understood as one species is actually multiple species
Heterotextus alpinus – previously Guepiniopsis alpina
Alpine Jelly Cone
Heterotextus alpinus
Synonyms – Guepinia alpina, Guepiniopsis alpinus
Orange Jelly Cone
Dacrymyces chrysospermus
- Growing on conifer
- Shaped more globular than alpine jelly cones (Heterotextus alpinus)
Golden Ear (Naematelia aurantia)
Witches Butter (Tremella mesenterica)
Habitat: Parasitizes crust fungi living on hardwoods
- Naematelia aurantia parasitizes Stereum hirsutum, false turkey tail
- Tremella mesenterica parasitizes Peniophora, giraffe spots
