I created a demo flashcard deck that should keep you busy for a while. This deck only begins to scratch the surface.
There will likely to be errors in these cards for some time however I am working on these regularly and these will expand and improve rapidly. To Update simply download the latest flashcard deck and import using the Anki desktop app.
Please send me your feedback jeremy@salishmushrooms.com
Step 1. Register for an account at https://ankiweb.net/
Step 2. Download the desktop app at https://apps.ankiweb.net
Step 3. Download my PNW mushroom deck here (version 1.04)
Step 4. From the desktop app, import the .apkg file into Anki
We all learn differently and different areas of interest. Email me at jeremy@salishmushrooms.com with your suggestions
There is a free android app and a $25 (yes) iOS app. I can make this easier to use from a website. Send me a note and I’ll move this project up in my list.
Planned Improvements
Scientific & Common Names
Both are useful and I use both regularly. We have scientific names many species and these are more consistent than common names. I include common names as often as I can
Useful and Not Useful
There is a lot of information that could be covered and much of it will not match your areas of interest. For now the two best ways to filter information are by using the tags I have created for common/edible/poisonous/chanterelle/morel, etc. For specific cards you don’t want to see you can ‘bury’ them using the options menu. I’m aware of this issue and I’m working on improving it
Complicated Installation and Updates
I completely agree and I want this to be as easy to use as possible. Before spending too much time building what I think will be useful, I’d like to get your feedback over the coming weeks and then build what I observe will be useful. Your feedback is extremely valuable.
Greater Variety Per Mushroom
Please share your own photos to help improve the variety available for each mushroom. We will learn to associate specific photos rather than the mushroom itself. I will work to include lots of variety and your contributions can significantly help
Recent Updates
version 1.04 (1/14/2021) Removed cards that were formatted poorly, overly specific, or otherwise unfit. Added new mushrooms.
Version 1.03 (12/29/2021) – Added significantly more cards. Reduced the use of Cloze Deletion […] which hides certain text until you ‘flip’ the card. Increased use of the traditional front-back card type. Deleted cards targeting difficult to learn characteristics. Formatted more cards as “what is this mushroom?”. Added tags to many cards to give users the option to study specific categories like ‘morels’ or ‘edible’.
FAQ
Why do you have questions on Genus?
Some mushroom are difficult to identify down to species however they are fairly recognizable to genus level. Some genera like the hedgehogs and chanterelles are all edible and others like Amanita, one might choose to avoid.
