Gyromitra californica is most easily recognized when the base of the stem has a pinkish hue. The rest of the stem is typicall white, turning yellowish or tan with age. The cap has a texture similar to Gyromitra esculenta however G esculenta is rounded and brain-like, whereas Gyromitra californica is more umbrella-shaped with inrolled margins.

Habitat – Widely distributed throughout Pacific Northwest coniferous forests
