Overview

Gyromitra montana is a large, brain-like mushroom of the Gyromitra genus. It has an appearance very similar to the more common, and toxic species Gyromitra esculenta.

Identification

Key to identifying Gyromitra montana is the width of the stem. Gyromitra has a very broad, stout stem that is nearly the width of the fully mature, brain-like cap.

The poisonous Gyromitra esculenta has a narrow, cyclindrical stem.

Edibility

Edible. This is not a beginner-level mushroom due to the similarity with seriously toxic species. Additionally, even when identified correctly some may still experience some reactions due to toxins found in many Gyromitra mushrooms.

After proper identification, cook thoroughly and eat only a small amount of this mushroom if it is your first time. This is a good rule for any new mushroom you intend to eat.

Distribution

Gyromitra montana is found most often in the Eastern Cascades and the Rockies

Seasonality

Gyromitra montana is a spring-fruiting mushroom which can be found at lower elevation and latitudes in April, most abundantly in May, and at higher latitudes and elevation into the summer
