False Turkey Tail

Stereum hirsutum

The false turkey tail can be recognized by its broad connection to the wood on which it grows. It grows primarily as a crust along the wood but develops turkey tail-like projections that make this somewhat difficult to recognize. Aside from the broad, flat growth along the wood, one can also differentiate this from the true turkey tail by inspecting the underside of the cap. Stereum has wide jagged pores whereas the true turkey tail has tiny pores in cream-colored tissue.

If you notice an orange jelly fungus growing on the same log, it is likely Naematelia aurantia, or Golden Ear
