Xerocomellus typically have some of the following characteristics:

Cap – Vinaceous black, purple, dark brown to light brown. Sometimes bumpy, or cracked with red or pink.

Pores – Yellow. Sometimes staining blue.

Stem – Yellow to red. Often both

Sometimes bruising blue. Found with both conifer and deciduous trees in late summer into late fall
