It looks like fall mushroom season is fast approaching. With a wider variety of mushrooms already showing up in the forests and over an inch of rain forecasted in the Seattle area by the end of the week, we could be in for a slightly earlier start than we have seen in the past few years.

Here is a summary of Seattle temperature and precipitation since 2018 (https://weather.wsu.edu/). We have barely had any measurable rain since July. While our average monthly precipitation for the summer is under 1in per month, this year was especially dry.
Mushrooms are comprised primarily of water so humidity and soil moisture significantly increase mushroom fruitings… however not all mushrooms respond the same. Decomposers like oysters (Pleurotus) and chicken of the woods (Laetiporus), often respond most quickly to precipitation.

Mycorrhizal (symbiotic) mushrooms like chanterelles, hedgehogs, and boletes can take up to a week or more.

My recommendation? GET OUTSIDE!
If you have the time, get out early and get out often. The season will evolve quickly and can taper off quickly with a cold spell.

Fall season kicks off with lowering temperatures and increasing precipitation however it will not begin to taper off until the mountains start to experience hard freezes. Typically we see the season beginning to taper off in the mountains by late October however the lowland and coastal areas will still be fruiting well into December and even into January.
