Adding Morel Maps to Your Navigation App

Using a navigation app while mushroom foraging is a great way to track where you have been, choose where you want to go, and help you get back to your vehicle safely. Here are some of the apps that I use.

Google Maps – Driving Directions, and terrain/satellite views while online

Maps.me – Free, lightweight map with full region downloads with easy to use hiking and driving directions for offline use

GaiaGPS – Feature-rich. Layer options with trails, public land, snow, forest fires, etc. Record your tracks. Save pins for favorite spots, or reminders about locked gates or unsuitable terraine.

Apple Photos (seriously) – The Map option is a great way to view your past photos on a map. I use this when I return to a mushroom area and want to see exactly where I found a specific mushroom like Bear’s Head or a Cauliflower. The map background only works offline, but photos will still show up on a blank map which is still useful for getting back to the exact spot.

Salish Mushrooms Morel Maps are primarily an online-based research tool but Pro users can download area details and upload them to navigation apps like Gaia, onX, and Avenza.
