Data Attribution Sources powering the Forayz map and apps
Forayz combines environmental, fire, forest, and land management data from federal agencies, universities, and open-data providers. Every layer is processed through our data pipeline, converted to vector tiles, and served from Cloudflare’s edge network. Below are the original data sources and their providers.

Environmental Layers
Soil Temperature
ERA5-Land reanalysis data — soil temperature at 0–7 cm depth. 9 km resolution, updated every other day with a 5–6 day data lag. Used in Forayz to show ground temperature conditions relevant to mushroom fruiting.

Snow Cover & Snowmelt
SNODAS (Snow Data Assimilation System) — snow depth at ~1 km resolution, updated daily with a 2–3 day data lag. The snowmelt layer is derived from SNODAS data and available seasonally (March–July).

Precipitation (14-Day Accumulation)
Daily precipitation data at 4 km resolution, processed into a 14-day rolling accumulation. Updated twice weekly with a ~2 day data lag.

Precipitation Normals (30-Year Climate)
30-year climate normal precipitation data (1991–2020 period). Shows long-term precipitation patterns at 800 m resolution. Updated approximately once per decade.

Active Wildfires (Current Year)
Current-year wildfire perimeters from the Wildland Fire Interagency Geospatial Services (WFIGS) database. Updated weekly during fire season (May–October).

Historical Burn Perimeters (2006–2025)
Fire perimeters for the western United States — recent burns (2020–2025, ~6,300 perimeters) and older historical burns (2006–2023, ~26,000 perimeters). Recent burns are updated weekly; older burns are static.

Prescribed Burns
Prescribed fire and hazardous fuel treatment activities on National Forest lands, from the FACTS (Forest Activity Tracking System) database.

Burn Severity
Per-fire burn severity classifications at 30 m resolution. Soil burn severity comes from the Burned Area Emergency Response (BAER) program; where a fire was not assessed by BAER, vegetation burn severity from the Rapid Assessment of Vegetation Condition after Wildfire (RAVG) program fills in.

Existing Vegetation Type (EVT) 2023 data, classified into 10 forest type categories relevant to Pacific Northwest mushroom ecology: Black Cottonwood, Coastal Rainforest, Western Cascades Conifer, High Cascades Fir, Rocky Mountain Douglas-fir, Rocky Mountain Spruce-Fir, Ponderosa Pine, Lodgepole Pine, Garry Oak, and California Oak.

Data Processing & Delivery
All geospatial data is processed through our pipeline, converted to PMTiles vector tile format, stored on Cloudflare R2, and served from Cloudflare’s global edge network. Environmental layers are updated on schedules ranging from daily to seasonally depending on the data source.
The same data powers both the Forayz web map and our iOS and Android apps, ensuring consistency across platforms.
