Slippery Jacks Suillus — the slimy boletes of PNW conifer forests

Suillus are the slimy-capped boletes of conifer forests. Pick one up and you’ll know immediately — the cap is coated in a thick, slippery gluten that sticks to everything. Most species form tight partnerships with specific conifers: pines, Douglas-fir, or larch. If you know the trees, you can predict which Suillus you’ll find.

About a dozen species occur in the Pacific Northwest. Some are genuinely slimy, others are dry and scaly. All are edible, though the slimy cap skin is worth peeling off before cooking. They’re among the most common boletes in the region — prolific in fall, sometimes carpeting the ground under young pine plantations.

Identification

Cap 4–15 cm across, convex becoming flat. Surface ranges from extremely slimy and glutinous (most species) to dry and hairy/fibrillose (S. lakei). Colors span yellow-brown, chestnut, olive-brown, and orange-brown depending on species.
Pores Small, round to angular. Yellow to olive-yellow, sometimes bruising brown or blue. No gills — this is a bolete with a spongy pore surface underneath.
Stipe Usually short and stocky. Often dotted with glandular dots (tiny raised brown or black specks). Some species have a prominent ring or veil remnants; others lack a ring entirely.
Veil Present in some species as a partial veil leaving a ring on the stipe (S. luteus, S. lakei). Others have no veil (S. brevipes). Veil color varies — white, purple, or brownish.
Flesh Pale yellow to whitish. Some species stain blue when cut (S. tomentosus, S. caerulescens); most do not change color.
Spores Olive-brown to cinnamon-brown in deposit. Smooth, ellipsoid, 7–11 x 3–4 um.
Habitat Always under conifers. Each species is mycorrhizal with specific tree genera — pines (two-needle and three-needle), Douglas-fir, or larch.

Slimy cap + conifer partner = Suillus

If you find a bolete with a sticky or slimy cap under pines or Douglas-fir, it’s almost certainly a Suillus. The slippery cap surface, glandular dots on the stem, and tight conifer association distinguish them from all other PNW bolete genera. The one exception: S. lakei has a dry, scaly cap — but its glandular dots and Douglas-fir habitat still give it away.

Key PNW Species

Six Suillus species account for the vast majority of encounters in the Pacific Northwest. Learning their tree associations is the fastest path to identification — each species sticks to its conifer partner.

Western Painted Suillus

Suillus lakei

The oddball — dry and hairy instead of slimy. Cap covered in fibrillose orange-brown scales over a yellowish background. Partial veil leaves a cottony ring. Found exclusively under Douglas-fir. One of the most common PNW Suillus species.

Slippery Jack

Suillus luteus

The classic slippery jack. Cap smooth and extremely glutinous, chocolate-brown to chestnut. Distinguished by a prominent purple-tinged partial veil that leaves a membranous ring on the upper stipe. Under two-needle pines — especially Scots pine plantations and lodgepole pine.

Short-Stalked Slippery Jack

Very similar to S. luteus but lacks a ring entirely. Cap smooth, slimy, brown. The stipe is notably short and squat — hence the name. Common under two-needle and three-needle pines, including shore pine along the coast and ponderosa inland.

Blue-Staining Slippery Jack

Cap surface is woolly or cottony (tomentose) rather than smooth — yellowish to olive-brown. Flesh and pores stain blue when bruised or cut. Under two-needle pines, often in sandy soils. The bluing reaction plus cottony cap make this one easy to identify.

Coastal Slippery Jack

Suillus pseudobrevipes

Very close to S. brevipes — slimy cap, no ring, short stipe. Particularly common along the coast under shore pine and inland under ponderosa pine. Often the most abundant Suillus in coastal dune forests. Separation from S. brevipes requires microscopy.

Stocky and robust with a slimy cap. Flesh stains blue when cut — the species name means “becoming blue.” Found under Douglas-fir rather than pine, which narrows things down. Often fruits in troops along forest roads and trail edges in fall.

Habitat & Where to Look

Every Suillus species is mycorrhizal with conifers. Know the tree, know the mushroom. Here’s the breakdown for the PNW:

  • Two-needle pines (lodgepole, shore pine): S. luteus, S. brevipes, S. tomentosus, S. pseudobrevipes
  • Three-needle pines (ponderosa): S. brevipes, S. pseudobrevipes
  • Douglas-fir: S. lakei, S. caerulescens

Young tree plantations are some of the most productive spots. A 15- to 30-year-old pine plantation in fall can be carpeted with slippery jacks. Coastal dune forests with shore pine are another reliable habitat — S. pseudobrevipes and S. brevipes can be extremely abundant there.

East of the Cascades, look under ponderosa pine at lower elevations and lodgepole at higher elevations. West of the Cascades, Douglas-fir forests produce S. lakei and S. caerulescens reliably.

Season & Timing

Suillus is overwhelmingly a fall genus in the PNW. The first fall rains in September trigger the flush, with October being peak season by a wide margin. They taper through November and are mostly done by December. Occasional spring and summer finds happen but represent a tiny fraction of observations.

The October spike is dramatic — more observations than all other months combined. Aim for mid-October through early November for the best Suillus hunting. They respond fast to rain, so check pine and fir forests 5 to 10 days after the first significant fall storms.

Edibility & Cooking

All PNW Suillus species are edible. That said, they’re not everyone’s favorite — the slimy cap texture and sometimes spongy flesh put some foragers off. Here’s how to get the best results:

  • Peel the cap. The glutinous cap skin is edible but unpleasant. Grab an edge and peel it off like a sticker. This is the single biggest improvement you can make.
  • Pick young. Older specimens get waterlogged and buggy fast. Firm buttons with pores still pressed tight are ideal.
  • Remove the pore layer on larger specimens if it’s gotten soft and spongy. Just scrape it off with a knife.
  • Dry them. Suillus dry exceptionally well and develop a concentrated, earthy flavor that works great rehydrated in soups and sauces.
  • Cook thoroughly. Like all wild mushrooms, eat them well cooked. Saute, stew, or add to soups.

A note on sensitivity: A small percentage of people experience mild GI discomfort from the glutinous species (S. luteus, S. brevipes). If you’re trying Suillus for the first time, eat a small amount and wait 24 hours. Peeling the cap helps reduce reactions.
