Cauliflower mushrooms are one of my absolute favorites to find. They can grow larger than a basketball and are quite easy to identify correctly.
Other unique characteristics are the ruffled texture, growth at the base of conifers, and slightly spicy scent.
If you choose to harvest this mushroom, cut it out from the soil at the base of the mushroom. There is a long brainstem-like growth running from the base of the mushroom down into the soil.
