Mushrooms of the PCT – NorCal

Kristi and I completed our first 1000 miles on trail heading into Castle Crags near Dunsmuir, CA. Here are most of the interesting mushrooms we found in this section from mid July. This video is a pretty accurate representation of what any dedicated mushroom-searcher would have found walking over this 80(?) mile stretch

It’s dry. During our 650 miles in Southern California and 350 in Northern California, we have only been rained on briefly one afternoon. Moisture is the limiting factor for mushrooms during these summer months so most of what we find are dehydrated Agaricus, puffballs, and veiled polypores. Some of the more interesting finds have been a series of boletes, a Pluteus, and one yellow coral.
