Variations in weather and their impact on mushroom fruiting
Mushroom season is heavily dependent on cycles of rain, temperature, and food availability. The following charts illustrate monthly averages for high, low, and precipitation for a selection of cities. Some of these also include a summary of iNaturalist observations by month to help highlight differences among various locations. If you find this interesting and would like me to include other locations please ask.
iNaturalist data is dependent on user uploads. This data will be skewed by a variety of factors however the charts should still provide an indication of the seasonality of mushroom fruiting across these regions.
Using Seek or the iNaturalist website/app to log your own finds in an excellent want to contribute to our understanding of mushroom fruiting in our region. Variations in weather, location, and nearby trees can significantly alter what mushrooms are found nearby. Our understanding of these factors is still quite limited and more observations can help us to learn more.
