What Elevation Do Morels Grow At? The season climbs from sea level to 5,000 feet — and the melting snowline tells you where it is right now
In the Pacific Northwest, morels fruit anywhere from sea level to above 5,000 feet — but not all at once. Spring morel season is a wave that climbs in elevation over roughly four months, starting on urban woodchips in March and finishing at high-elevation burn sites in July. Elevation is really a question about timing: the productive band at any given moment sits just behind the retreating snowline. The live snow map below shows where that line is today.
Morel Elevation by Month
A typical Washington and Oregon season. Warm years run early, cold or heavy-snow years run late — sometimes by two or three weeks.

Elevation is a stand-in for something else
Nothing about 3,000 feet is special to a morel. Elevation matters because it controls when snow leaves and when the ground warms. That is why a south-facing slope can fruit two weeks ahead of a north-facing slope at the same elevation, and why a warm spring shifts the whole calendar. Read elevation as a proxy, then check the actual conditions.
Where the Snowline Is Right Now
This map shows current snow depth across the Western US. In spring, the edge of the blue is roughly the elevation the season is working through — ground that just came out from under snow is ground worth watching.
Snow cover is naturally seasonal. It builds from late autumn, peaks in midwinter, and retreats up the mountains through spring — which is exactly the period this map earns its keep. By late summer only the volcano summits are still holding, and the map goes quiet until the snow returns.
Chase the melt, not the calendar

How to Hunt the Snowline
Work the edge, not the white. Ground still under snow is not producing. Ground that melted out two to three weeks ago and has had time to warm is the band worth targeting. The snow map shows you where that edge sits; check back weekly and watch it climb.
Let aspect break the tie. At the same elevation, south-facing slopes melt out and warm first — they lead the season. North-facing slopes run behind, which is a liability in May and an asset in July when everything south-facing has already dried out and finished.
Use a heavy snow year to your advantage. Deep snowpack delays the season but often extends it, keeping soil moist further into summer. A light year runs early and can dry out fast. Comparing this year’s snow map against how the season normally runs tells you which kind of year you’re in.
Check access before you commit. A burn at 4,500 feet can be perfectly timed and still unreachable because the forest road in is under three feet of snow. The snow map answers that question before you drive.

What this map can’t tell you
- Snow-free does not mean ready. Bare ground still needs time to warm. Pair this with soil temperature before deciding to go.
- Resolution is about a kilometre. Fine for regional snowline, too coarse for a specific gully or road cut.
- It lags a couple of days. A fast warm spell will have moved the real snowline before the map catches up.
- Elevation bands are typical, not guaranteed. The table above describes an average year. Local conditions, aspect, and fire history all move it.
