PNW Trees

Forest and fungal ecosystems are so connected with one another that it can be nearly impossible to have one without the other. Learning to recognize different tree species can be helpful for determining the identity of a mushroom and also help you to find areas most likely to contain mushroom species you are hunting.

For example, chanterelles predominantly associate with Douglas Fir and Western Hemlock trees. On the other hand, there are few mushroom species that associate with cedars. When I find myself in a stand of trees dominated by cedar, I keep my eyes peeled but I keep moving.
